IMH Imaging is one of the top digital imaging houses in the world. Whether it’s The Queen of England or The Queen of Hollywood (that’ll be Angelina Jolie) – they are used to retouching the most recognizable people in the world. IMH specialize in high-end advertising and editorials with clients such as Valentino, Gucci and Burberry and magazines such as Vanity Fair, Italian Vogue and I-D. They pride themselves on working closely with their clients and offering a tailored service that is personal and of the highest quality. It’s not surprising to learn that the founder Marcus Harris perfected his craft under the watchful eye of Mario Testino. Founded in 2005, we spoke with Marcus to get the insider tack on working at the top of the retouching tree.
How did you get into re-touching?
I used to be an advertising photographer in New York and I realized that retouching added so much that couldn’t be achieved through the lens. Often subtly but unmistakably. I found I enjoyed it so much I made the switch… I was fortunate to have some great mentors who taught me so much.
When did you set up IMH Imaging and what did you set out to do differently?
About 4 years ago after I left Mario Testino’s studio – I simply set out to continue doing good work.
Do you have a ‘trademark’ style? If so what is it?
I like to think I understand what my clients or even new clients are looking for and work according to their criteria while bringing a little something of my own.
Can you tell us about one particular professional success of which you are especially proud?
I have been happy with many of the campaigns I have done but I’m always happy to finesse a piece and have a client say they’re really happy with it – whether the job’s big or small.
How do you avoid over-retouching images?
You have to know when to stop and you have to trust your eye.
