GALERIE Pixel Grain Starts Exhibition Series 2009: Photography In East Germany
The series, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, starts with the exhibition „zu Hause“ (at home), Berka 1950 – 1960, by Ludwig Schirmer.
Working as a miller in 1950s Berka, a small village in Thuringia, Schirmer’s real passion is photography. In his spare time he photographs friends and neighbors. He is with them at work, during festivities and in their leisure time. He takes pictures of his family, the streets in the village and the woods. The people do not pose for him. They are the way they always are. They do not feel watched because he is one of them and that is exactly what his pictures convey. Schirmer is an autodidact and reaches a level of professionalism that starts landing him small advertising jobs. In 1960 he moves to Berlin and becomes a famous advertising photographer. After his death in 2001 Schirmer’s children rediscovered his work from Berka which is now on show at GALERIE Pixel Grain.
