Born in 1954 in Germany, photographer and director Ellen von Unwerth specialized in erotic femininity. After a decade as a fashion model herself she moved behind the camera, bringing a first-hand knowledge of kinetic energy of fashion photoshoots to the creation of her own photographs. Her work offers a distinctly sexual and playful version of fashion and beauty photography. Her sensual campaigns with Claudia Schiffer for Guess? in the early 1990s launched Ellen’s commercial career which has since skyrocketed. She has contributed to top magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Interview, The Face, Arena, L’Uomo Vogue and i-D, has published several books and created campaigns for Victoria’s Secret, Banana Republic, Tommy Hilfiger, Baccarat, Bebe, Moët & Chandon, Veuve Cliquot, H&M, Diesel, Chanel, Miu Miu and Blumarine as well as a series of publicity advertisements for HBO’s Sex and the City. Besides Ellen has directed shot films for Azzedine Alaïa and Katherine Hamnett, music videos for several bands such as Duran Duran and Salt’n’Pepa and commercials for Clinique, Revlon, Victoria’s Secret, Cacharel] Bacardi.
