I Can Teach You How To Do It: 080 Barcelona Fashion Week
by Floor Serbrock posted on February 02, 2010There are a couple of sites amongst my morning regimen of acclimatizing to the new day. Thankfully I’ve managed to let go of the hardcore celebrity bashing gossip sites, the ones I compulsively had to check no matter how shallow and voyeuristic they made me feel.
Not specifically less shallow, sites like The Cobra Snake and I Can Teach You How To Do It now compose a milder addiction with observing the lives of complete strangers. And how cool these ones are. Am I already old at 25, or how cool are the kids of today? Way too cool.
Not only celebrating underage partying with girls who own more Chanel and Miu Miu than I could ever dream of, Marc Hunter of The Cobra Snake and Gerard Estadella of ICTYHTDI also scour and document the globes fashion shows. I Can Teach You How To Do It just posted some pics of Barcelona Fashion Week, and I think the tone of collections is generally refreshing and avant-garde, without being too insane. The shows that caught my eye the most however, were of Manuel Bolano and Krizia Robustella.
Immediately attention-grabbing are the giant teddy-bear heads popping out of the shoulders, sides, or backs of the jackets at the Bolano show. Models toting haircuts a la Hedi Slimane, but bulgier, show off poofy sleeves, layers, ruffles and bows, with blanc expressions. Colors are overwhelmingly beige, dusty pale rose, creamy grey, and with the huge sleeves and ruffled collars, the models look like a real-life hybrid of a Harlequin doll and Little Bo Peep. In fact, the models in general remind me of the Gothic Lolita look popular in Japan at one point- this is greatly enhanced by the Vivienne Westwood inspired shoes they’re teetering in.
Krizia Robustella‘s collection is far away from Bolano‘s, but equally original. The less trashy, and more funky deluxe spirit of the eighties looks revived in a futuristic incarnation, best captured by the haircuts of the models. Rockstar, heavy bangs cover the forehead, yet rather than being wild and big, the style is strict and impeccably groomed. Golds against blacks, chains and geometric-prints, dark lips and boxy-cuts, are met against such details as olive-can bracelets. The latter gives the collection an apocalyptic, urban-tribe edge.
ICTYHTDI doesn’t have new posts as frequently as The Cobra Snake, but when it does it‘s more often of runway fashion rather than local celebrities. I find both equally intriguing, but these excerpts from Barcelona Fashion Week are particularly inspiring to me.
