Joel Horwitz and Julia Knüpfer win Designer For Tomorrow
by Liz McGrath posted on January 30, 2009So, we’re happy to say that the two designers who won Designer For Tomorrow were also who we predicted would win! Joel Horwitz and Julia Knüpfer were the first class winners! Joel’s fantastic bright blue suit with neon stripes and an irridescent sheen looked fabulous on the catwalk and his structured tracksuit with a cool graphic black and white print on it also stood out a mile from the competition.
Even before she was announced, Julia Knüpfer was also marked out as a clear winner on the runway. Her knitwear was futuristic, directional and daring – large angular sleeves and oversized capes were impressively structured, and delicate knitted tights were light as cobwebs. The collection oozed it’s own strong creative style.
Many of the other designers had beautiful garments on show: Dawid Tomaszewski had great-fitting tight trousers in pink satin and a beautiful long black dress that was sculpted at the front and flowing with material at the back. Cem Cako also delivered good pieces – showcasing a strong black military feel in well-tailored jackets and raincoats – and a well-executed voluminous skirt. Frida Weyer must surely have been in third-place, her cream satin dress with carefully crafted oversized frills at the hem and arms was a total triumph.
We look forward to seeing what Horwitz and Knüpfer will do with their Peek and Cloppenburg coaches – and of course what designs they will finally sell in the store!
