Lena Hoschek Spring/Summer 2010: Elvis‘ Perfect Girlfriend
by Rie Cau posted on July 02, 2009We were absolutely delighted to step into the Austrian Designer Lena Hoschek’s venue at Bebelplatz, because not only were we given a colourful lei along with the usual goodie bag – all courtesy of Ms. Hoschek; but we were also absolutely thankful for the flamboyant Hawaiian-inspired music and the playful mood, which allowed us to chill out a little bit from the lethal heat and the Fashion Week madness, which was starting to creep up on us already.
With Hawaii as an inspiration for Spring/Summer 2010, the collection exhibits an eminently light and easy quality with an array of models, looking like glamourous pin up dolls with their perfect hair and red red lips, wearing Ms. Hoschek‘s swinging Austrian-meets-50s housewives dresses. What put a smile on our faces was not only the infectious smiles we saw on the gorgeous models, as they strut down coquettishly; but the fact the clothes are designed and worn by women with hips, bums and a realistic figure. Cinched at the waist, these dresses perfectly accentuates and complements those dangerous curves a real woman possesses and playfully let her tantalising essence come out from deep within. Ultimately, celebrating a woman at its heart – joyfully and pleasurably.
There is a lot of work going on the dresses from the choice of embellishments – silk, lace, feather, straws and ruffles to the final finishing touches.
But what stood out were the crisp aloha shirts with a custom flaming hot print of Elvis with a cheeky lipstick mark on his face and variations of hula dresses. For the brave and the daring, these hula dresses are available simply as it is – without an underlayer. Coincidentally, that is also a great choice for today, when the weather is so steaming hot and it is impossible for us to breathe anywhere we go.
My favourite thing about the show was the use of this lustrous fabric, which appears very simple, but has a complex hologram effect, which stuns us all with its hypnotic elaboration.
The overall look reminds us of the perfect housewives from the iconic 50s; but in comparison, the look from Ms. Hoschek has got its own edgy Hawaiian spunk, which makes the entire look come alive, instead of being dead plastic with its over-the-top perfection. As the press release says: ’It’s a collection that Elvis‘ [glitzy] girlfriend would have worn.’
In other news, Franziska Knuppe, the German model and a front row guest today, was dressed in one of Ms. Hoschek’s playful pieces and had a little photoshoot on the runway before the show commenced; but the true moment that made all of us in the room gasped in an echoe of deadly starstruck silence was when Suzy Menkes – the fashion critic from the International Herald Tribune and the heroine of every Journalist in the room – took to her throne on the front row. Naturally, everybody in the room took their high-tech cameras out and snapped a cyber stellar shot of the fabulous femme with her signature pompadour.
With Ms. Menkes present at the show, I am sure Ms. Hoschek’s status as an up-and-coming next big thing is written in permanent ink.
