Burberry Prorsum Spring/Summer 2010: The Weather Man
by Rie Cau posted on June 23, 2009On Saturday 20 June 2009, Christopher Bailey of Burberry Prorsum put on a striking show for Spring/Summer 2010 upon a theme that has been in the traditional heritage of the British label since its birth in 1856: the weather.
Although the idea may sound like stinking antique from the chest of ancient relics; in reality, Mr. Bailey revolutionised it to go along with the modern times – to be aesthetically attractive, technologically advanced, but never forgetting men‘s basic needs along the way.
The mood and the overall ambiance at the Burberry Prorsum runway, as established by the set, the lighting and the accompanying soundtrack, which is a marvellous medley of Snow Patrol‘s ‘Chasing Cars’, Brett Anderson‘s ‘The Infinite Kiss’, Boyce Avenue‘s Cover of Rhianna‘s ‘Umbrella’ and Squeeze‘s ’ Who’s That?’, was one that is poetically cultured, sensual and mystically alluring – full of the old noble charms that is true to the identity of an English gentleman.
With the motto ”form following function”, utility is the ultimate key to this season. Coats were consequentially tailored with more than enough pockets. This idea is particularly attractive to men, like my very own father, who often finds the pockets of coats not deep enough and worst of all, things falling out accidentally – giving him nightmares of looking inconceivably clumsy and above all silly in front of his serious work mates and some very important people. English man or not, that is definitely not a good sight of any men at all!
Naturally, the colour palette this season focuses mainly on solid all-purpose colours, like mystic blue and tree trunk brown. Amidst all that, we discovered one red hot chilli coat, which reminds us of Santa Claus and his delightful visits. However, as worn by Serbian Sensation Nikola Jovanovic with a crisp shirt, tailored pants and smart shoes, we know this is for sure much better than Santa‘s yearly visit!
With the economy still on the gloomy side and the global weather completely upside down (Since the beginning of June, it has been raining here in Berlin almost every day. Who said England is the only place on earth to suffer from wild untamed weather condition?), these delectable capes and coats will surely be a sell out globally, in particular in countries like France, Germany and United Kingdom.
As observed last weekend by our spy at one of Berlin‘s extravagant department store, Galeries Lafayette, menswear is already flooded with a mass of men trying out different coats. This certainly conveys the indispensability and importance of a statement coat in a man‘s wardrobe and above all, their interest in purchasing this particular stable item. In this case, Mr. Bailey’s offer is timed perfectly!
Indeed, coats are not the only thing that Burberry Prorsum men should be thirsty for this spring/summer, as Mr. Bailey re-works a pair of vintage Chelsea boots in tantalising taupe.
Moreover, for the more eccentric and daring men, we spotted a leopard print top to show something of a more ferocious nature!
With the cut, the quality, the form and above all the utility and functionality, which Mr. Bailey is offering here, men will surely find the collection invulnerable and irresistible.
Well… You can‘t control the weather, but at least, you can control your wardrobe and be invincible!
