NYFW Fall 2010 Ready to Wear: Calvin Klein's minimal, austere beauty
by Floor Serbrock posted on February 19, 2010New York Fashion Week redeemed itself a bit when Calvin Klein churned out yet another gorgeous and timeless collection for this year‘s Fall season. Placing it comfortably amongst the rest of Calvin Klein’s beautiful runway creations, it‘s a safe collection, nothing too crazy or new, but then again that‘s not what we expect from Calvin anyway. We expect elegance, class, understatement and sophistication, and that’s what we got.
A ghost of the nineties swooshed through the collection, especially captured in the awkward, unique lengths of some of the dresses; shin length cuts, longer than the knees but not quite ankle. Calvin Klein always reminds me of the nineties, probably because I associate it with two icons from that era. A young Kate Moss with her virginal, full lipped beauty and aura of minimalism, and Cher from Clueless in that epic scene when her father sees her coming down the stairs in a skimpy dress and asks with furry eyebrows and an expression of horror: „What the hell is that?“ „A dress.“ „Says who?“ „Calvin Klein.“ Brilliant.
Black, white, grey, cornflower blue- colors in elegant and classic cuts, this years collection remains true to the minimalism I find so characteristic of the house. Perhaps distinctive of this year‘s season however, is a particularly sober, almost austere air. Surprisingly however, this doesn‘t depress me, maybe because the models look so powerful, or maybe just because Calvin Klein‘s so pretty.
