London's Top 10 It-Girls!
by Liz McGrath posted on April 07, 2009London has always done It-Girls very well, probably better than anywhere else actually. There is something about London – the intertwined nature of the fashion, music and art scenes combined with the paparazzi culture – and the fact it is the perfect playground for the wealthy , gorgeous, fashionable and hedonistic creatures who inhabit it means these girls often become famous on an international level. ’It-Girls‘ are the centre of a higher class of celebrity, they have unique dress-sense, a magnetic charm and are constantly in the press – more often for their misbehaviour and tempestuous love-lives than their demure appearances at countless fashion events. Here we salute the Top 10 London It Girls – oh you pretty things!
Daisy Lowe, Model
Daughter of a previous London party bee Pearl Lowe and as it turns out, Gavin Rossdale. (In typical It-Girl style Daisy didn‘t find out he was her father until last year.) She burst onto the modelling scene all doe-eyed volumptuousness and soon had every fashionista at her feet – she‘s been the face of Agent Provocateur, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Pringle of Scotland, has walked for the likes of Vivienne Westwood, Burberry and PPQ and has been on the cover of i-D sucking face with her then boyfriend Will Blondelle. But it was her relationship with über producer Mark Ronson that really put her in the headlines. When they split she went back to her red-head ex Will, who she‘s still with.
Alice Dellal, Heiress, Model
Alice Dellal is the architypal It-Girl: for starters she has the right background: she‘s the granddaughter of a British real-estate mogul, Jack Dellal, and daughter of a Brazilian model, Andrea Dellal. Her godfather is Mario Testino (of course!) and he‘s photographed her for Paris Vogue. She is also the new face of Agent Provocateur. Her style is what sets her apart though; she has a distinctly tomboyish grungey edge mixed with a potent sort of sexuality. Her hair sports a punky undercut on one side, and she is usually pictured out in checked shirts, jeans cut-offs, ripped tights and skyscraper heels or DM‘s.
Kate Moss, Model
OK so she‘s older than all of them, but that doesn‘t matter, Kate is still at the top of the London party and fashion scene! She really is the Queen Bee in fact and anyone she shows support for deems it to be the ultimate compliment (ie: Kate was very supportive of Daisy Lowe‘s first show for Agent Provocateur, much to the model‘s delight). We all know what Kate Moss has done (everything) so no need to list it here, but basically her relationships with rockers Pete Doherty and now Jamie Hince have held the public captivated these last few years. Her clothing collections for Topshop have been storming successes and means that every teenager and twenty-something in the UK has something ,Kate Moss‘ in their wardrobe. She‘s the ultimate It-Girl and can still party most of these newbies under the table.
Agyness Deyn, Model, Singer
Born Laura Hullins, the girl who once worked in the chip shop in Manchester is now one of the world‘s top models. Her rise has been nothing short of meteoric, hailed as ,the new Kate Moss‘ she has walked for everyone and has been on the cover of everything. Literally, you name it, Agy‘s done it. She‘s great friends with fellow party It-Girls Lily Allen and Pixie Geldof and has that great modelesque habit of only dating scruffy rockers (most recently she was briefly engaged to Albert Hammond Jr of The Strokes). Of course to the critic’s amusement she also sings a bit herself and has numerous bands, the latest was called 4 o’oclock heroes. She divides her time between New York and London where she is regularly papped in her signature kooky tomboyish punky style. An IT-Girl through and through.
Alexa Chung, TV Presenter, Model
Alexa Chung is the current new high priestess of tomboy geek-chic cool. She‘s dating an Arctic Monkey, is a TV Presenter on various music shows (where she is revered for her comic style and deadpan remarks with celebs) and is continually papped while out at at parties or events – and then her picture in the celebrity weeklies is almost always accompanied with the title ,How To Get Alexa‘s Look!‘. She‘s got class though and unfortunately doesn‘t seem prone to much scandalous behaviour, but is a bona-fide It-Girl nonetheless.
Pixie Geldof, Socialite, Model
Forget her irritating, ubiquitous and increasingly tragic sister Peaches. It‘s all about Pixie, bitches! The youngest daughter of Bob Geldof and the late Paula Yates has been on the party socialite scene in London for a while now but only in the last year has she really started to shine. Suddenly fashionistas are taking notice: she was recently on the cover of Italian Vogue if you don‘t mind! The title was ,So Young So Cool‘: doesn‘t get much better than that in the It-Girl stakes. We‘re sure Peaches is mightily peeved (while we‘re just pleased!)
Sienna Miller, Actress, Model
Ah yes Sienna Miller. Love her or loathe her, she is still doubtless one of London‘s best exports in terms of It-Girls. Her relationship with Jude Law thrust her into the spotlight, and his infamous affair with the nanny made her an international topic of conversation. Would she leave him? (She did, then they got back together, then they split up, got back together, split up, repeat into infinity). She also apparently had a one-night stand later on with Jude‘s good friend and future-Bond Daniel Craig – just to make her point I guess. And why not. She is a paparazzi favourite now in America where she spends lots of time although her personal relationship with married billionaire Balthalzar Getty caused quite the scandal (but in It-Girl land, this is par for the course). Her kooky boho style has been copied by thousands (to the great displeasure of Kate Moss, who apparently accused Sienna of ,stealing her style‘). Nevertheless, she does score in the fashion stakes again and again, most recently winning the UK Elle award for most stylish woman. Her and her sister Savannah also have their own clothing line „Twenty8Twelve“). Other than just looking good, she can actually act too when she puts her mind to it: she was utterly fabulous playing the ultimate (if ultimately tragic) New York It-Girl Edie Sedgwick in the film Factory Girl – keep coming with the films and the high-profile flings Sienna, and you‘ll be a leading It-Girl for a long time to come.
Lilly Allen, Singer
Ok so this one may seem a little doubtful but not every It-Girl has to be super posh you know. Lily Allen had the right credentials to begin with: her father is the famous actor/comic Keith Allen. Lily rose to stardom over her myspace page and her first Mark Ronson produced album ,Fine, Still‘ was a smash hit, as is her new follow-up ,It‘s Not Me, It‘s You‘ – in both the UK and the USA (not an easy feat to achieve.) She is also just as known for the following things: her boozing, her drug taking, her public dissing of other celebrities, her flings with a Chemical Brother and multi-millionaire art mogul Jay Jopling (ie: classic It-Girl behaviour).
Georgia Jagger, Model
Just as soon as one gorgeous Jagger girl seems to have grown up moved on from the party scene, another younger one always seems there ready to take her place. So it was the case with Elizabeth (who took over from Jade) and now it‘s Georgia‘s turn. She is the last in the line of beautiful daughters from Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall. (I‘m tempted to write ,thankfully‘ here). Georgia is only 16 but is alöready turning heads with her modelling work (what else?) and her rock‘n‘roll boho style (what else?).
Leah Wood, Model, Singer
She isn‘t on the scene so much anymore since she got married last year but Leeha Wood is still something of an It-Girl, when she feels like it. Her father is a Rolling Stone (Ronnie Wood) and she of course is a model/singer. Her band have even supported David Bowie on tour (oh the joy of your parent‘s connections). When her husband lets her out, we are sure she will still be good for being seen falling out of clubs like China White at 6am.
