Sao Paulo Fashion Week - As told by a local!
by Camila Schwarz posted on January 20, 2009Hey people! I just wanted to let you know that for the next few days im going to be blogging for Lexposure about Sao Paulo Fashion Week!
Im Brazilian but live in Berlin and this time im not there at the fashion Week – however im going to write it all about it and hopefully can transport a little of that infamous Brazilian heat over to us all. Judging by the recent images of Gisele walking yesterday for Colcci, it’s not going to be hard to do!
Sao Paulo Fashion Week is the most important date in the fashion calendar for all of Latin America. It’s running from 18th to 23rd January and really brings the city an extra special flavour. Sao Paulo itself is the most populated city in Brazil, with over 11 million people living there – imagine this with the extra influx of the worlds fashion contingent (models, press, writers, photographers) – and you get a city that is abuzz and full to bursting with glamourous people. The location where it all goes down is the impressive Oscar Niemeyer designed Bienal building, located in the centre of Ibirapuera Park – the city’s largest. (Incidentally, fact-fans – Oscar turned 100 years old today! wow!) However the fashion week didn’t always have such a grand home – when it started off back in 1996 it was called Morumbi Fashion Brasil and used to be in the middle of a Shopping mall! So It has really progressed beyond all expectations.
It might be fair to say that Brazil really entered the international fashion stage through it’s gorgeous home-grown girls – models who have become mega-stars such as Isabeli Fontana, Adriana Lima, Gisele Bündchen, Alessandra Ambrosio, Fernanda Tavares, Ana Beatriz Barros, Izabel Goulart and Ana Hickmann
have really flown the flag for Brazil. Lately there has also been the “discovery” of some fresh design talents such as Alexandre Herchcovitch by some international fashion magazines. This week all of these beautiful models are walking in the catwalks in this 26th Edition of Sao Paulo Fashion Week. The theme this time is a positive description of Brazil´s way of life, “Brasileirismo”, which is about expressing the richness of the people’s spirit and our happy disposition!
