Design Meets Sustainability: colette And smart Collection
by Johannes Keil posted on June 19, 2009In a bid to strike an eco-friendly chord within the global fashion community and win over fashion-conscious urbanites around the planet, smart (yes, the car brand) have teamed up with world famous Parisian fashion store colette. Based on the shared notion that fashion should be completely sustainable, the offspring of this alliance is a unique product range, containing shirts, scarves and shoes as well as jewellery and tote bags.
Each piece — all of which are made wholly from recycled or recyclable materials — has been crafted by internationally renowned designers from five fashion metropoleis (New York, Berlin, Paris, Sao Paulo and Copenhagen) and has been produced in a strictly limited run of 150 pieces only.
Brazilian shoe label, Melissa, were the first to step forward and offer their highly respected recycled mens shoes into the range while another one of our favourite labels, Danish WOOD WOOD, designed an organic cotton shirt that helps underline the importance of thinking green. By the way: we are totally in love with the racing dice on the shirt!
New York based label and concept store, OPENING CEREMONY, contributed a cute checkered tote, which is made from a lot of recycled everyday products, including a bottle opener. Maroussia Rebecq’s label, Andrea Crews, were also amongst the designing team. The Andrea Crews collective and label are internationally renowned for using second hand products, making them an obvious choice for smart and colette to produce 150 unique hand-made pieces of recycled jewellery as their offering.
Our favourite, however, is Lala Berlin’s piece: a large square scarf made of silk and organic cotton. The cute paradise, that is totally inspired by animals and nature, will inspire its wearer to influence everyone in their own urban jungle.
To be completely honest, my love for the collaboration isn’t the greatest, but these pieces are really cute and fashionable. colette just never gets it wrong!
