Erwin Olaf - Rain, Hope, Grief and Fall at Institut Néerlandais
by Anna Eimerl posted on May 14, 2009Marking his first solo exhibition of this scale in France, artist/photographer Erwin Olaf, presents ‘Rain, Hope, Grief and Fall’ at Institut Neerlandais. Alongside the still photographs, Olaf will also present films that are also a part of the debut show.
Erwin Olaf is an influential contemporary photographer. In his exhibition he captures the stories of serene characters in chillingly adequate surroundings with each subject looking as if they are waiting for something to happen. Each piece’s setting refers to the kitsch era of America in the 50’s and 60’s with the results being similar to that of Rockwell’s works. The photographs and films are nostalgic, grotesque and sarcastic but also refer to the aesthetics of ‘film noir’ – a style and phenomenon which David Lynch brought to mainstream attention.
Erwin Olaf explores the themes of beauty, solitude and despair with his unique vision that combines fashion, cinema, history and advertising.
The exhibition is a co-production of the Institut Néerlandais and Fotomuseum Den Haag.
From 14 May – 5 July – This one is not to be missed!
