Festival De Cannes
by Beeke Melcher posted on May 15, 2009Glamour at the Croisette. Well, with its declining glory or not, Cannes still knows how to orchestrate itself.
Jury Chairperson and French actress legend Isabelle Huppert and her colleague director Asia Argento radiated glamour at the opening film which was Disney Pixar ‘Up’ – the first animated movie ever to open the Golden Palm festival.
Models such as Dutch Doutzen Kroes, Eva Herzigova, Laetitia Casta and English Lady Lily Cole are set to grace the festival with their attendance. Unlike the others though, Lily’s appearance at the festival also accompanies her starring in Terry Gilliam’s fantasy flick ‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus’, which also originally stars Health Ledger, the deceased Australian actor.
Among other stars of the scene are Lars von Trier, Pedro Almodóvar and Quentin Tarantino who at the age of 44, is one of the youngest directors in the competition (they really should get some fresh meat for next year’s competition!). Tarantino’s ‘Inglorious Bastard’ movie sounds as sick as Pulp Fiction – meaning mind blowing!! And Brad Pitt (who’s a highly anticipated guest)… well..he can play in every movie and still be amazing!
Charity shouldn’t come off badly at the star studded event as the annual amfAR’s Cinema Against AIDS benefit gala features an exhibition by photographer Bruce Weber and rolls out the red carpet for Donatella Versace and Carine Roitfeld.
Sadly – yet again – the credit crunch has become such a threat it is even affecting everyone at the Cannes Film Festival there have been withdrawals from usual sponsorships such as Louis Vuitton and Fendi. For the first time ever, Hollywood is also kind of neglecting the whole festival. Yachts weren’t chartered for this time around and for the first time in decades the hotels aren’t completely booked out.
