Gary Baseman: adorably perverse pervasive art
by Floor Serbrock posted on January 26, 2010Gary Baseman’s “Once Upon a Time” is a postcard that has been an integral part of the walls of the many rooms I have called home since it made its way into my life in the year 2000. Taking childhood fairytale characters and rendering them into a nightmarish composition, I’ve retained a 10-year liking to the image. On his website, the L.A native is described as a “pervasive artist”, “adorably perverse”, and as “blurring the line between toy culture and fine art with his strong iconic images, both playful and dark, childlike and adult, id driven and thought-provoking.” That last insight so eloquently captures Baseman’s work, that I had to copy-paste the entire quote (I’m not lazy- if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it).
His latest project is in collaboration with KidRobot Black. If you’re a pop-art, expensive vinyl toys fan (or Japanese) you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.
Check out his website and revel in his freaky visions. But only if you aren’t afraid of tampering with (and sodomizing) the innocent landscapes of your bedtime story memories.
