Movana Chen - Knitting Magazines For Fashion

by jobot *** posted on August 19, 2009

You see them everyday and don’t realise their potential – the hundreds of thousands of magazines that are created for fashion, lifestyle and just about everything else under the sun. Luckily, the artiste Movana Chan, has an entirely different take on what the common newsagent would consider their latest shelf fillers.

Since 2004, Movana has been creating ‘magazine clothes’ that are just that – made of old magazines. Her idea is to play with deconstructing and reconstructing shreaded magazine papers to give them entirely new meaning from their original forms. The art she created is known as a body container sculpture which are used to examine the relationships between clothes and the media and to reflect on the public’s consumption of disposable commodities.

You really must check out her work – it’s well worth a read if anything!
