"It's impossible to be depressed in this room": a Beastie Boy's mom's awesome apartment
by Floor Serbrock posted on February 04, 2010It‘s a shame that Hester Diamond seems to no longer be active in the world of interior designing. Having read an article about her in the New York Times in 2008, she recently popped into my mind again. The now 81-year old (a number adequately accounting for her lack of activity) is the mother of Beastie Boy Mike-D, a fact which in itself I think is noteworthy.
The article covers the decoration of her uptown New York apartment in collaboration with Jim Walrod, and this video shows what the two have to say about such things as color, taste, and style. They have some keen insights and the fact that Diamond challenged and re-assembled her entire routinized style at such an age (at any age, really) is fantastic. Her apartment is stunning- a graceful mix of funky and classic, art-deco and renaissance, fresh and fun. Nick Dine‘s 1960‘s aesthetics is met with the bachelor-pad, minimal suave of B&B Italia, and Italian renaissance images are thrown in there too. It‘s an eclectic mess of colors and styles that just gets pulled off miraculously with such class. Of course taste is subjective, but I for one might murder to live here.
