Wallpaper Magazine Guest Edited By Karl Lagerfeld & Philippe Starck
by jobot *** posted on September 10, 2009Following their successful previous year of femme fatales, which included the likes of Louise Bourgeois (my favourite female artiste EVER), who worked to make the lifestyle bible, Wallpaper Magazine the unstoppable triumph it has become by guesting as Editors, the October issue of the magazine sees cult fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld and multi-faceted French product designer, Phillippe Starck, taking the reigns in what promises to be on of the best visual feasts to grace the end of year glossies.
In the sneak peek we have been teased with we see that both have designed a respective cover which reflects them and their work with Karl’s being that of a peel and reveal style cover which shows his god-like muse, Baptiste Giabiconi, fully clothed in a Dior Homme suit which when peeled away reveals Giabiconi in his birthday suit. To ensure that every reader could re-live their first suit-peeling experience, every single issue of Wallpaper with said cover was hand positioned – impressive! Starck’s cover is equally as curious as he attempts to visually depict life 4 billion years ago. The cover is composed of three sheets of tracing paper, over a blank silver cover. The first sheet is detailed with an amoeba (as drawn by Tobatron), to represent 4 billion years ago, the second, a monkey (drawn by HelloVon), to represent today and the third has a question mark (by GBH) representing the unknown!
As far as stories go, Karl’s contributions are quite as one would expect, in the sense that they are all self indulgent and show off everything from his Chanel 2010 Cruise Show in Venice and two tracks from his recent NYC and Moscow shows, Philippe has given the Wallpaper readers a 24 hour soundtrack (which he mixed and composed) which is quite amptly titled, The Starck Mix, and a quite honourable video titled ‘Philippe Starck On Life And Design’ in which he surrenders his limelight to others whom ‘deserve to be heard’.
Go to the Wallpaper website now and see precisely what both artistes have surrendered for the magazine’s cause.
