Avant-garde To The People: Hussein Chalayan For J Brand
by Johannes Keil posted on September 17, 2009Celebrated conceptual designer Hussein Chalayan and J Brand’s Creative Director Susie Crippen collaborated for autumn’s most wanted Jeans line. By teaming up with premium denim Label J Brand, Chalayan is determined to make „avant-garde accessible“ to the mainstream. „What I love about these designs is that they carry the fit that J Brand is known for but with a sprinkle of our sensibility”, says Hussein Chalayan about his latest indigo creations.
In fact, the fusion resulted in a commercial line of three simple pieces, suitable for every day life being “accessible” at reasonable prices between $247 to $257: the Beau, a boyfriend jean, the Circuit, an ankle length jean, and the Legging, a skinny jean taken to the extreme. Yet a closer look at the exclusive pants shows an artistically constructed twist in small details with Chalayan’s famous handwriting. Susie Crippen says, “I love his conceptualization and the elements of detail that he brings to his work. This collaboration gave us the opportunity to take the J Brand aesthetic and have Hussein interpret it”.
The super fitted skinny jean has a shifted side-seam detail with a lifting effect, which results in Chalayan’s cutting-edge silhouette. The Circuit defines its modern shape by a cut with a narrow leg and a loose crotch and knee. U.S. Vogue’s Fashion and Features Director Sally Singer declares the Circuit her favourite piece from the collection: “They give you the anti-fit harem pant look that’s been so popular.” Its zipper at the tuck is yet another signature design element by Hussein Chalayan to give the J Brand jean an exciting new twist.
The Avant-Jeans collection can be found at Barneys in New York, at Harvey Nichols in London and is soon due to hit shelves at Colette, Paris and Quartier 206 and The Corner, Berlin.
