Top 10 Trends For Spring/Summer
by Liz McGrath posted on March 05, 2009Here are my Top 10 Trends for Spring/Summer 2009 – there are some great ones here – it’s going to be fun getting dressed again! Thank god winter is finally gone!
1. Acid Brights
Eye-popping colours are everywhere this season! To be really on-trend wear them in blocks of colour. From Matthew Williamson to Herve Leger to Balmain to Calvin Klein (everyone basically) – acid brights ruled the catwalks. Snap yourself up a look-at-me dress and feel the colour-enhancing effects!
2. Boyfriend Jackets
This is a big trend and very popular with your cooler-than-cool celebrities. Think Daisy Lowe, Alexa Chung and Mary-Kate Olsen and you are totally there. The trick is to throw the jacket over something skimpy (like denim shorts or skinny trousers or a skirt), so that the look stays feminine. Make sure the jackets are slightly too large for you, they’re not meant to be fitted. I love the relaxed-chic look and will definitely be buying one!
3. Stonewash Denim
Hey there 1980’s! Yes stonewash is back, and believe it or not, it’s looking kind of hot. Pair it with heels and glitzy loose tops or plain tees for an updated look. Check out American Apparel if you want a cheap pair!
4. Bandage Dresses
OK, so i know that not all girls can get away with this look. But nonetheless it is a huge trend, especially on the celebrity-circuit. Who doesn’t own a Herve Leger dress? By the way, in fashion circles Herve Leger is known as ‘The King of Cling’. In 2008 the label was relaunched under new designer Max Azria, responsible for the sexy styles seen on the spring/summer catwalks, and I have to say, these dresses are so damn sexy and the bodycon technology in the bandage-style does help to make you look super svelte!
5. Killer Heels
Get ready to teeter-totter! Not only are the heels skyscraper high but they are also as fussy and crazy as can be! Whether its Louis Vuitton’s tribal, ribboned affairs or Yves Saint Laurent’s ‘cage’ shoes, heels are seriously out-there!
6. Leather Leggings
This one has been around since last year but its really gathering a strong fanbase. Designers such as Dolce and Gabanna had great leather trousers on show and Schacky and Jones have had this faboosh pair out since a year. Of course you can get cheap imitations but there is nothing like the real thing! And they will last you a lifetime.
7. Asymmetric
Coming in all sorts of forms, the asymmetric look is most definitely back. Whether in tops, dresses or trouser jumpsuits – it works. labels in love with the diagonal slash are Gucci, Lanvin, Nicole Farhi, Bottega Veneta, Prada, YSL, Karl Lagerfeld and Balenciaga. Pretty much everyone actually and of course the high-street all have their own slash-price versions!
8. Tribal
This is one of the most interesting trends for spring/summer – you can really create great looks with this. Anna Sui, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Christopher Kane, Zac Posen and Vivienne Westwood Red Label are just some of the designers to really have fun with it. Whether you go for a graphic print or simply opt for some of the fabulous ethnic jewelry thats around, wear with confidence on hot summer days!
9. Bows
This is one for the girly-girls out there. Bows are simply everywhere. On heads, necks, collars, waists, dresses, jumpers – you name it, there is a designer out there who has stuck a bow on it. Dolce & Gabanna featured oversize bows throughout and Schumacher also had bows throughout their collection. Tie yourself a bow and off you go! Just remember: only 1 bow per outfit!
10. Big Sleeves / Structured Shoulders
Probably one of the most unusual trends and it will certainly pass by next season. Anyway, if you want to really follow the fashion-pack, then get yourself some big sleeves or some serious shoulder pads! Labels like Sisi Wasabi, Julien MacDonald, Iceberg, Gareth Pugh and Dolce & Gabanna all rocked themselves some big sleeves!
