Wooly Dog Portraits By Amelia Makes Art
by jobot *** posted on August 14, 2009I LOVE dogs. One of the main reasons that I decided to up pixy stix to move to Berlin was so that I could better my chances of having a pooch companion in my life as having a K-9 in London has got to be nearly as impossible as having unicorns over for dinner. What better way to show your little furry friend just how much you heart them then by having a 3-D sculpture made of them entirely out of wool?! Sounds barking mad doesn’t it? The Portland, Oregan based artiste, Amelia Santiago does just that. Amelia uses needle felting to create wool fiber sculptures of dogs (and other animals too!), which are comissioned by their owners. Using a labour intensive method which uses nothing but barbed needles, Amelia has made more than three hundred sculptures in the past three years – each taking at least 20 hours from start to finish. Amelia takes pride in making each of her pieces look like its original by depicting the animal’s personality through expressions and physical features.
I would definitely love to have Amelia make some 3-D sculptures of my dog, Ruth – but she being a Bearded Collie, might take more than 20 hours to sculpt and I don’t think she could sit still long enough to let that happen!
