For the past twenty years and nine months, Steven Meisel has been the artist behind Vogue Italia’s famous covers. He, along with Franca Sozzani, who has given him full liberty in creating these images that tell stories but nevertheless focus on women and clothing, has made Italian Vogue an international title.“Vogue Italia is one magazine to keep. One that will remain. Its kind is rare and is becoming rarer”.
The photographer’s third book, “Three Hundred and Seventeen & Counting,” gathering his total of 317 Vogue Italia covers, from July 1988 to April 2009, will be published this week on the occasion of current exhibition of the 317 covers on display until June 7th at Villa Noailles in Hyères, where the 24th International Festival of Fashion and Photography just took place last week-end of April. This overview of Steven Meisel’s Vogue Italia covers through 21 years of fashion photography not only showcases the evolution of his own work, but also the evolution of fashion, of tastes in models and graphism.
Thanks to avid collectors such as Annie Montminy from HFGL or James Tinnelly @ Women NY, you may have already seen some pictures of rare pieces including the very first Steven Meisel’s cover of Italian Vogue, July/August 1988 issue, art directed by Fabien Baron and featuring Robin MacKintosh.
Only calling for the whole wall of fame of the 317 together…
