The Love Blondes part 1: Toni Garrn
by Maud & Pénélope . posted on February 25, 2009It sounds like our typical topics for Fashion Does It Better but it’s clearly the kind of series that belongs to Lexposure. It seems odd and funny at first sight but will mostly rely on an analysis of what some people called a trend last season: the blondes on worldwide catwalks. Siri, Sigrid, Toni, Ymre, Nimue, Constance, Katrin or Viktoriya, just to name a few. They were successful and most of them are still popular these days. They’re all blondes and all different. Is there really a trend ? How does it evolve and will it survive the hype ? Many questions and so few answers so far.
We borrowed the title of these topics to a song performed by Kim Wilde in the early eighties as we see similarities between these looks and the atmosphere of our most cherished decade. Exaggerations and extravagance versus stereotypes: it might be a good motto to start with. And Toni Garrn’s editorial in latest issue of german Vogue illustrates it like no other as a stylistic prowess and a real fashion statement. For anyone caring about models, at least. Meet the cowgirl.
Things aren’t as obvious on runways. There’s no more analogy between catwalks and magazines and no better examples than our gang of blondes to illustrate it. Viktoriya Sasonkina is on latest Prada campaign and has never walked the show. So does Toni Garrn with many of New York collections. She used to be heavily related to Calvin Klein for a couple of seasons ? She wasn’t there this time. You wouldn’t expect her to fit Alexander Wang’s atmosphere ? She looked like the epitome of his aesthetic. You’re on the fence with her neutral look ? She proved to be versatile from Preen (graphic mood) to Ralph Lauren (Ralph Lauren mood). Toni blurries the lines of her own character, her own image built by the likes of Steven Meisel or Mario Testino. Toni blurries the lines of the typical blond myth and even seems to give a serious yet playful twist to Greg Kadel’s usual inspirations in this story from Vogue Germany.
Rocking at home and ready to create more international shockwaves, that was for our first Love Blonde of the season.
