Typically Atypical: The Girls By Steven Meisel In Vogue Italia June 2009
by Maud & Pénélope . posted on June 09, 2009With Meghan Collison on the cover and a whole bunch of great girls (and boys) all over the editorial, Steven Meisel gives us one of his best piece of the year for Vogue Italia. The atmosphere is typical of his work for the magazine, his models selection too: very atypical. Let’s get tricky. Meghan already had two covers before this one and we can only enjoy (if not more) a third one. The rest of the team is equally striking: Anna De Rijk, Julia Hafstrom, Dorothea Barth Jorgensen, Nimue Smit and Sara Blomqvist.
First one who caught our attention is Anna De Rijk, of course. She is clearly one of our favorite girls of the season, she made our Top Ten after achieving a flawless show list and keeps the same high level on Resort catwalks these days. Anna was known as for her chin, probably the most beautiful of the fashion world and we guess her gorgeous smile will count from now on.
Another leading lady of the Resort collections, who’s also the biggest surprise and the most coveted redhead of the moment, Julia Hafstrom gets her (well-deserved) spot in this story. Meisel’s love for outstanding newbies is still alive. Discovered by swedish boutique New Blood Agency and managed by powerhouse among powerhouses IMG worldwide, Julia is taking off in a fairy tale with Vogue Italia and Prada resort.
Dorothea and Nimue are among the sweetest faces ever. And the strongest. Cute yet versatile, light-hearted but obviously intense, this might be the beginnings of two great stories. Dorothea was almost everywhere she had to be this season and Nimue has already a couple of high profile editorials in her book. Both can claim their places in this issue too.
Maybe the last one, last but absolutely not least, Sara Blomqvist is the best surprise of the cast and the one who deserves the most such a great exposure. Perennial favorite of Russel Marsh, catwalk queen and unique face might all be written on her passport, she was still in heavy need of this kind of editorial in her roster. Playing a character lost somewhere between a delicate doll and the witchqueen who put her spell on us, Sara might be the one who impressed us most in the end.
Translucent plastic might be the new black, these models might be la creme de la creme of the new generation and any other expectation is warmly welcome but one thing remained sure and safe with this June issue of Vogue Italia, both the magazine and its iconic photographer proved us again they’re at the top of their game. Whatever happens.
