Lexposure's Top Ten Newcomer Models of Fall/Winter 2009
by Lexposure Rankings posted on March 25, 2009The Fall/Winter 2009 catwalks were not dominated by as many newer faces as previous seasons, but nevertheless a few notable girls stood out from the rest of the crowd. Whereas many faltered or faded as the shows moved onward towards Paris, these were the names that remained prominent on our minds, and we are delighted to present them to you as the potential stars of the upcoming seasons.
Alla Kostromicheva
Women Direct / Union / Women Milan / Angels Paris
We first became acquainted with Alla last season on the Dior and YSL runways (Amongst others), but this season there was just no avoiding her anymore. Her arresting stare and pristine looks landed her on the runways of Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Alexander McQueen (Opening slot), Balenciaga and a repeating job for Yves Saint Laurent, which she also opened. Though she is the only girl on the list who made an international runway debut before this season, true recognition is better given now than any previous moment, as she went nearly unnoticed last time around.
Anna de Rijk
DNA / Viva London / Women Milan / Viva Paris / Paparazzi Amsterdam
Discovered in a Dutch TV modelsearch program years ago and signed with DNA shortly after, Anna had to be the surprise of the season. She’s a girl that you know is around, but never expect to explode on the scene after all those years. But it happened. Boy, it happened big time. First she was seen in several important London shows – such as Christopher Kane – and then in Milan at Missoni, Marni and as girl number two at Prada. Lanvin, Vuitton, Dries van Noten and (of course) Miu Miu responded in kind in Paris, and her European run made Anna a very successful surprise.
Dorothea Barth Jorgensen
Women Direct / Elite London / Elite Milan / Elite Paris / Modellink
A consistent performer, Dorothea was one of the few new girls that did great in every city this season. This Swedish beauty built her runway mileage at both Marc J. shows, BCBG Max Azria and Calvin Klein in New York. She then continued her strut in Europe for Burberry, Prada, Karl Lagerfeld, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Lanvin list goes on.
Hanna Rundlof
Marilyn NY / Why Not / Marilyn Paris / Modellink
Precious Hanna is the winning new girl of the season when you look at sheer numbers: 51 shows. Very nice, no? Luckily, it’s not just quantity for this girl but major quality as well. Nina Ricci, Calvin Klein, Vuitton, Prada, Jil Sander, Hervé Leger, Ungaro and many more of those shows you want to be booked for as an emerging model were quickly added to Hanna’s resumé — a resumé that’s bound to expand very soon.
Jac
IMG NY / IMG London / IMG Milan / IMG Paris / Gaga Models
She may have missed Paris, but who can complain? Young Jac first made headlines when she scored the Fall 07 Hermès campaign completely out of the blue. And then, it was just a matter of waiting to see her taking over the international runways, and she certainly didn’t disappoint. Despite being a freshman to the catwalks, she opened and closed Calvin Klein, closed Marc by Marc and Missoni and walked for Phi, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Fendi and Dolce & Gabbana. You can definitely say that this new girl dominated.
Karolin Wolter
Supreme Management / Independent / Women Milan / Women Paris / M4 Hamburg
Are the Germans taken over? Whether the theory be true or not, get ready to add Karolin to the list of German models making it big lately. This classic beauty may have fallen at Hervé Leger, but the incident only added to the buzz that pursued her. How else would you call stints for Marc, YSL, Lanvin, D&G and Valentino? Oh, and she opened Jil Sander, by the way. Buzzworthy indeed.
Katlin Aas
Independent / Women Milan / E.M.A.
When this Estonian suddenly opened Christopher Kane in London, all eyes were immediately on that other elusive opening spot in fashion week. Yes, the one at Prada. And she got it! Not only that, the Prada exclusive also scored the closing spot — a rarity for any model. Exclusively doing Miu Miu in Paris as an addition to her earlier shows gives Katlin the ultimate start for a great career.
Kelsey Van Mook
Next NY / Next London / Next Milan / Next Paris / Next Toronto
Kelsey was one of the best example of what a good timing can do for a career, taking it slow at the beginnings then being the where she really had to be. And only there. There is no other than Givenchy which turned out to be a place to watch carefully as one of the best source for new faces this season. Besides some more than surprising casting choices, unexpected girls from various eras, the completely fresh and new ones got a real first-class exposure at the show. If walking it was a statement, no need to mention what kind of attention it brings for the girl who opened it. That girl is Kelsey from Next.
Ranya Mordanova
Supreme Management / Women Milan Women Paris / Avant Russia
New hairdos can do miracles, as has been proved in the past, and the latest example is the unique Ranya. The 17-year-old Russian turned important heads in Paris with her fresh pixie crop and landed a major semi-exclusive. She walked for Givenchy (As part of what was arguably the best cast of the season) and popped up at Louis Vuitton, complete with bunny ears — hopefully hop-skipping towards an editorial take-over.
Rose Cordero
Supreme Management / Women Milan / Women Paris / Ossygeno Model Management
The Black Rose – as she calls herself – was one of the most anticipated faces of the season. And when she finally showed up at Burberry, everyone watched carefully as Rose made her mark. This was a season of perfect preparation for bigger things, as she only did 4 shows in Europe: Max Mara, Francesco Scognamiglio, Louis Vuitton and the aforementioned Burberry. Nevertheless, she certainly made an impact and now has everybody waiting impatiently for what is next.
