Ingo Maurer: lamp designer extraordinaire
by Floor Serbrock posted on March 03, 2010The first time I was introduced to the genius of designer Ingo Maurer meant the first time i fell in love with a lamp. Hanging majestically from the high ceiling above my aunt and uncle‘s dinner table, Mauer‘s goose-feathered and metal creation „Birdie Suspension“ is composed of a dozen winged light bulbs stretching to break free from the twisted wires confining them. It‘s as humorous as it is funky as it is sophisticated a design (with a sophisticated price tag), and I call it love because I was intrigued, enchanted, wanted to be close to the lamp and have it in my life integrally. Well, more specifically wanted to posses it, so perhaps it wasn’t love after all.
Created in 2002, „Birdie Suspension“ has two additional variations designed by Maurer. „Birdie‘s Nest“: a similar ceiling fitting but due to comparatively less color, more minimal and less funky; and Lucellino, the adorable one-winged-bulb protruding out of your wall from two single wires. I want them all.
Though Birdie may be my favorite series of Maurer, his vision continues to boast beautiful and original pieces, with impeccable craftsmanship, such as his latest „Lacrime Del Pescatore“- an elegant, sparkly piece with a dreamy and princess-like allure.
