UMA Scouting is an international model agency with an emphasis on scouting. Operating from the heart of Berlin, they focus on an a unique and exclusive selection of models, being always on the look out for extraordinary newcomers, to guide them profesionally into the fashion industry and place them in reputable modle agencies worldwide. Lexposure.net spoke to Jule Spaete from Uma Scouting about their way of working and being always on the scout…
Where, when and why was UMA Scouting established?
We had been thinking about the concept for almost a year, but we only started programming and designing our website in January, which finally went online a few weeks ago. UMA is based in Berlin since we both live here and the city has a great potential regarding male models.
Had you always wanted your own company?
I’ve always seen the act of running my own company as a useful tool to generate my ideas. And more importantly, after finishing university and being a “guinea pig” of the bologna process, I felt the strong need to leave academia and start something on my own.
How did you get into model business?
I’ve always been drawn to this business and started gaining work experience in different fields of the fashion industry from an early age. Beyond that, I did a substantial amount of modeling myself to finance my studies and Mo has been working as a professional make-up artist in the industry for a long time.
There were obviously a lot of model agencies already out there - so what was it that UMA set out to do differently from the rest?
These days, a lot of agencies seem to stand in their own way when it comes to website design. I personally find a lot of agency websites rather confusing and “overdesigned”, which makes it more complicated to find what you’re looking for. In contrast to that, we created a simple, customer oriented website which provides easy access to all required material such as portfolios and sedcards.
Furthermore we present our models in a standardised way which, in our opinion, makes the comparison and selection of models less complicated. And ultimately, being a smaller agency we can afford to provide better individual support and career planning.
What’s new about this idea?
I don’t actually think it’s possible to create something completely new within the model agency sector, but there is still room for reinvention. With UMA we rely on our approach and hope that there are people out there who will respond positively. Furthermore, we are convinced that Berlin offers a market for our concept.
