Before studying photography, Craig McDean, born in 1964 near Manchester England, originally trained and worked as a car mechanic. Assisting photographer Nick Knight, McDean began his photographic career in London and his early editorial work was featured in magazines such as i-D and The Face which led to advertising campaign work for high-profile clients such as Gucci, Emporio Armani, Oscar de la Renta, Yves Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein and Estee Lauder. He has also shot celebrities including Natalie Portman, Joaquin Phoenix, Hilary Swank, Uma Thurman, Gael García Bernal and Nicole Kidman and contributed regularly to French and American Vogue, W and Another Magazine. Craig is married to stylist Tabitha Simmons and currently based in New York City.
